So since you are all now fully aware of my day to day weirdness…..let’s get on with my next random musings. I feel like this post belongs in the month of October well I missed the boat on that one so let’s just go with it even though it’s February….thanks so much for playing along!
As I’ve gotten older and wiser, my approach to Halloween has certainly changed. I was never much of a planner when it came to costumes…I usually would go with whatever was in my closet and “make it work”. When I look back at my costumes throughout the years I seriously cringe….I cannot believe I let myself out of the house like that. I mean I can’t even post the pictures on here because I think my stomach is showing in 75% of them. At what point did that flip switch where Halloween went from fun kid activity with getting candy to full out lingerie with wings and oh I get it she’s a fairy!
I have only bought one Halloween costume in my entire life and it was an Alice and Wonderland dress because my one girlfriend was having a Mad Hatter Tea party and I was picked for Alice (not because I was special or anything I think I was the only blonde). Nothing in my closet was remotely going to work for it so of course at the last minute I had to run to all the party stores and find that dress. One place had it…Spencer’s gifts did you know that store still existed? I thought it went out of business the same time as Coed Naked shirts. Do you remember those???? My mother wouldn’t let any of us wear them no matter how cool there were.

I can’t move past this yet. So the newer Alice in Wonderland movie I mean what is it even rated? I think I am going to legitimately have nightmares over this picture. This is suppose to be a children’s movie no? I would never take myself nieces and nephews to see this crack pot filled movie.
Getting back to my original point….I know I take detours sometimes. Mean Girls nailed it completely about how Halloween is an excuse for girls to dress up let’s call it…..inappropriately and how companies take all the childhood fairy tales and make them into adult costumes.
Case in Point. “Grownup” version of Cinderella.
How about Little Red Riding Hood. Or as they are now calling it “Racy Red”.
My niece was a ladybug this year….certainly not with a costume like this.
Okay this one is just hilarious. I didn’t know a raccoon could be sexy. I just thought they were dirty mean animals who rummaged through garbage cans. However apparently you can sex up any Halloween Costume with a short skirt, mask and tail.
Okay so this is the grand finale where I pull all the random musings together….. at least I hope I can. I was home a few weeks ago I was looking through some old pictures my parents had and started cracking up when I found some stellar pictures that I would like to share with you to really illustrate my point. Amanda circa 1987…wasn’t I so happy looking in this picture?
Clearly I wasn’t having a good day. First hands on the hips…now crossed against my chest. Probably had something to do with that hat I was wearing.
Flash to Amanda 2010 when my one girlfriend orchestrated the Alice in Wonderland themed Halloween party. Side note I don’t know where this costume went….I think I loaned it to a friend and never got it back.

straight up, halloween is an excuse for women to dress like hoes and no one can say jack.
i’ve never dressed up as a (slutty) character. i guess the raciest i’ve done is gogo from kill bill but that’s wasn’t racy unless you count an adult wearing a school girl uniform. but i was carrying a mace so that’s not hoe-ish, that’s badass. just sayin’

You make a gorgeous Alice, it’s one of my favourite movies and I’ve dressed up as her a bunch of times (even though I am not blonde).
I’ve dressed slutty on at least 3 occasions in my youth and now I don’t dress up at all. Mainly because I can’t stand that everyone dresses so slutty and it becomes a slut competition, haha.
Pamela Runsick says
HAHAHA that raccoon costume is absolutely hilarious!! SO true about Halloween being an excuse to wear as little clothing as possible… especially here in FL!

I don’t miss dressing up “sexy” for Halloween at all. Not like I really did anyways. Now that I’m married we I don’t even care if we do a thing for Halloween!
thebitsandbobsblog says
In the Netherlands we don’t really celebrate Halloween! But I never quite understood the movies which had Halloween parties in it; I would’t feel comfortable in such short skirts/dresses as those girls were wearing and I’d just spend all night checking wether my butt would hang out or not haha :p
Ashley says
I did the whole dress up sexy for halloween thing in college, but I can’t say that I was ever a sexy disney character. I’m so happy that those days are over though. I always froze my butt OFF in barely there clothing. This past halloween I did a creative group costume that we made ourselves and it was so much more fun and such a better costume than a sexy costume like I have done in the past.

Maybe that’s why Halloween bugs me so much? That and because these ridiculously slutty costumes cost WAY too much money! You want me to pay $150 for something that shows more skin than it covers? And I can only wear it once?! No thanks.
Jordan says
I’ve done sexy pirate and sexy school girl when I was a teenager but I was never HUGE on Halloween. I’m mostly in it for the candy and scary movies. Honestly though, I admit that I would definitely wear that Little Red Riding Hood costume but I feel so bad for whoever buys that awful raccoon costume!
Kate @ Another Clean Slate says
I always think of the scene in Mean Girls where she actually wears a costume and not a skank outfit. Love it! And I am so over the slutty costumes but that doesn’t leave many store bought options as you point out.
Jamie says
The sick thing is that they make kids versions like that too.
Carly says
hahaha I love this post! I was never into halloween and don’t think I had a proper costume anytime after like 6th grade! I was always a cat or witch or something else that didn’t require much work! But you look gorgeous as alice!
Katie Elizabeth says
This is totally the truth! I’m not a big fan of Halloween for this reason. It would be more fun if people actually dressed up in fun costumes rather than trying to get away with wearing as little clothes as possible! Loved the throwback pictures!
Helene in Between says
totally agree, but i don’t see it going away unfortunately!
Shelby {Recent Somethings} says
Halloween and sluttiness will probably always exist. But my future daughter has another thing coming if I find evidence of it!

great!

Hahah this is so true. I am not a huge Halloween person… I actually don’t even know the last time I dressed up! I just always think the costumes are such a waste of money haha

I dressed up as a slutty cop one year and just thinking about it embarrasses me! Never ever again!!
Jackie Harrison says
I always get dress for Halloween I look forward to it but never to sexy I give out candy so don’t want the parents to get the wrong impression. Do love the red riding racy hood lol. You look very pretty in that image you look like cindy.

uggggh guilty! so sophomore year college and a little after (so shameful) my friends and i always picked a theme… sophomore year we just did the easy headpiece – cat ears, devil horns + short skirts + tank tops (keep in mind we went to school in MILWUAKEE= freezing in october), junior year we dressed as nurses + doctors (complete with jello shots in sernges), senior year it was disney and i was alice too! i had a tea cup all night. annnnd then it continued after college… YMCA (i was the native american), bears football players, cheerleaders and ditka (in short shorts and nylons duh!), wizard of oz (for the record the tin-woman can be slutty…i wore a short silver dress + heart necklace) and domino pieces (clever! black dresses with white stick-on circles). we didnt dress up last year and i think i wont be slutting it up from now on (wah-does this mean i’ve “grown”up). it was fun..and unfortunatly im sure there are LOTS of photos on facebook floating around.
Elizabeth at Southern Finesse says
I guess as long as I can’t actually see your “naughty bits” I don’t really care – if you don’t ever dress like that normally. Then let your freak flag fly on Halloween before you store it away for another year. However, I much prefer to be warm and comfortable/not get treated like I’m easy so I won’t be wearing the barely there costumes. The closest I got was my dance shorts with knee high socks and a football jersey – I was freezing! haha
Amy {Cupcakes+Couture} says
haha i love alice in wonderland and i dressed as her for halloween this year! i was wearing more fabric than like 4 of your average halloween girls put together haha –> http://statigr.am/viewer.php#/detail/575594927439393632_38910683

You should have just used your Alice costume from 1987. It was probably just as short as the XS anyways. I’m borderline hooker status with my costumes. This was a costume party and not Halloween but one year I went as one of Dexter’s victims. I wrapped myself in tons and tons of saran wrap. Even with a nude leotard underneath, I looked like a naked hoe. But it was also won costume of the night. Sluts really do have all the fun.
Lauren says
Hahaha love this! Halloween is actually my birthday so honestly, I’m not a huge fan of it – I’m jealous! I think once you get past college, the slutty costumes need to go. I have a friend who hosts a party each year just so she can dress slutty. I really want to tell her that I thought we were past that, but I don’t go to the party, so I just stay out of it!
Amanda - Voyage of the MeeMee says
I am straight up ASHAMED of some of the hoe ass shit I wore for Halloween when I was younger. Good god. Lace booty shorts, etc… *cringe*

I love how seasonally inappropriate this is, I really do!

Haha this is too funny! Love that throw back Alice and Wonderland pic! But so true about the little clothing on Halloween! If you go to downtown Orlando you might want blinders for your eyes because there are some things showing that shouldn’t be showing if you know what I mean!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who dislikes these Halloween outfits! I find them so tacky haha. I’m guilty of owning an Alice In Wonderland costume too though that I wore a good few years ago for a fancy dress party. Cringe! Haha. Also, how cute are you in those childhood pics?! Aww :)
Anna says
In the netherlands we don’t celebrate halloween that much ): just an excuse to throw a party and get drunk, that’s it. No pumpkins or costumes.

i have never dressed sexy for halloween! probably because i can’t pull it off (i;m a clumsy gal..and probably because i just said “gal”) i’m a total Cady, hehe.

I seem to be the minority here, but my favorite was when I dressed up as a Ghostbuster a few years ago. Boobs on display and ass out. And I.love.that.outfit. That’s my “Yeah, I’ve had kids and still look good” costume. I guess it’s the equivalent of a man buying a Ferrari for his 40th.
