I don’t watch the news or listen to talk shows. The first because all the news talks about is violence and it feeds into my fears already of not wanting to pump gas at night. The second is because I honestly don’t have time to watch either. However, I caught this in my news feed the other day and it provoked rage. Like that kind of hot/heat rage that creeps up your back and makes your ears burn. When I heard Joy Behar and the “ladies” of the View blatantly bashing women first off. Y’all how I feel about this subject. Then when they had the audacity to say “why is that nurse wearing that DOCTORS stethoscope around HER neck“.
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Try not to reach through the monitor and shake somebody.
Background first. The Miss America pageant was on Monday night and Kelley Johnson, Miss Colorado’s talent portion was a monologue. Listen homegirl. I am right there with you. I can’t sing, I can maybe dance after a few libations……and unless someone is going to roll a sheet of ice out for me to skate on…..my talents are slim to none. Her talent was an original monologue where she talked about how one of her first patients who meant the most to her and influenced her career path, was a man with Alzheimer’s disease.
Watching my Grandmother go through that in her finally years and seeing not only the NURSES but patient care techs, respiratory therapists, heck even the people who changed her linens. Those angels cared for my grandmother like she was one of their own. Brushed her hair, gave her kisses on top of her head and told her she was doing a great job. Damn I’m getting all teared up even writing this. I thanked every single one of them for the selfless care they gave to my Grandmother at her most vulnerable time.
To see these women of “the View” bash Kelley Johnson, Miss. Colorado for this and the audacity of one of them to say “and why is she wearing the doctors stethoscope” is the most ignorant comment I have heard in a long time. I am a Nurse Practitioner. I see my own patients, come up with a differential list, execute a plan of care and can write prescriptions. I am part of a collaborative team that involves Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurses, Medical Assistants, and Echo sonographers. From the front desk person in my office to the IT person, you know what? We all take care of the patients.
Clearly, these ladies of the View are blind to what is happening in America when it comes to healthcare. There are not enough providers to handle the ever growing demand. I can tell you first hand, I teach Nurses and Nurse Practitioners at the local college and they are the most dedicated and hard working individuals. I mean what does these ladies at the View think we do? Hold the hands of the Doctor? Why would we need a stethoscope to actually LISTEN and ASSESS our patients?
Nurses are the primary care providers of patients. When you are in the hospital, who is the person titrating your medications, assessing your vitals, documenting and charting and knows the ins and outs of you? Your nurse. I am not a doctor basher so I am not getting into the who does and who doesn’t of the work force. I am just so taken aback and pretty much pissed off that something so uneducated and ignorant could come out of the mouth of women who are allowed to have influence over people.
I work in Cardiology so stethoscopes are my second set of ears but the next time you go to your provider see what is actually done with that stethoscope. Also, please never assume that the person with a stethoscope is a doctor. There are so many healthcare providers that are all specially trained to collaboratively take care of you as a complete individual. I would love to be a fly on the wall when one of those ladies actually has to receive health care. I want them to see what THAT NURSE can do WITH HER OWN STETHOSCOPE. I have never watched that show and now I will never watch it. I encourage you to do the same.
End rant.
Thanks for listening.
Go give a nurse or a teacher a hug today. Maybe send her a coffee. She’ll listen to your breath sounds and your ailments and make you feel better I promise. That is what us healthcare peeps do. xoxoxo

I can’t even believe The View did that. They really need to apologize.

I am shocked that the View said that… as women we really need to be lifting each other up and encouraging each other. People say these ridiculous things about professions they know nothing about which is just stupid and embarrassing…
Janelle @ Wholly Healthy says
I am in utter shock about this. Not only about how uneducated they are about what nurses do, but also about Alzheimer’s. I’ve had a family member with Alzheimer’s and also volunteered in a care home with individuals who had dementia and EVERYONE involved in their care is doing something important. Period.

Girl you just spoke my feelings 100%. As I’ve gone through this PA school journey over the past 2.5 years, nurses have without a doubt taught me the most. They are the eyes and ears of the doctors. They are working like DOGS to make sure their patients are cared for. Don’t get me wrong, doctors have a whole different kind of stress, but nothing like the hard work that nurses have. I was SO outraged when I heard these ignorant comments and I will without a doubt never watch this show again. P.s. I hope that lady doesn’t find herself in a hospital anytime soon… god forbid a nurse have to auscultate her heart, lungs, bowels anytime soon with that “doctor’s stethoscope” ;)
Jenn says
They were definitely being really close-minded and just stupid. I’m surprised that neither of them has apologized yet. Fine you didn’t like the monologue (I personally didn’t think it sounded like a “bunch of emails” like the one woman said), but they definitely downgraded nurses and that deserves an apology. Especially the stethoscope thing. I can get making a mistake like that and just not thinking (kinda), but make an apology especially when it’s obvious you have offended a lot of people. Let’s just say I wouldn’t want to be Joy Bahar or the other chick if they ever get sick….
Biana @ Blovedboston says
It was a disgusting thing for them to discuss in that way – I am so happy with all the backlash they are getting!! xo, Biana –BlovedBoston

I don’t like The View. All it is is a bunch of rich old hags dissing on younger women around the world. Anytime they get a “younger” view member, they are cruel to them as well. What was the name of that blonde chick they were such a bitch too? Yah, the girl was a bit of an airhead but they were SO mean to her! Catty ass bitches with nothing better to do than to talk shit about everyone on national TV. Can’t they do that shit OFF the air in their own home like the rest of us? I can’t wait for their network to pull the plug on them.
Ashley says
SUCH an ignorant statement- health care is about the entire care team; a team where nurses play a huge, essential part. The idea that only a doctor should be in charge + wear a stethoscope is so, SO antiquated! Major blunder by The View to slag Miss CO off rather than lifting her up for showcasing a talent that may not be the typical pageant go-to, but demonstrates a serious passion for her career and a major contribution to society.
Great post, girlfriend! :) Get ’em!

What an ignorant statement for Joy to make…. Nurses are so important to the healthcare system and deserve all the respect in the world. Keep up the hard work friend! Thankful for your dedication! :)
Kate @ Green Fashionista says
Wow… just wow! I hadn’t heard about this yet, but growing up with my mom as a nurse this hit home for me too. Nurses usually get much more face time with patients than doctors, and their jobs involve so much sacrifice and you have to truly love your job. I’m shocked by the ignorance on a show that I thought was supposed to empower women :-P
Keep doing your thing girl!

Ugh. I saw something about this floating around on Facebook but I hadn’t taken the time to dig in deep so that for not making me Google :) ANYWAYS I obviously don’t know the full context of her comments but the depths of the ignorance here are just unfathomable to me. I am not in health care nor is anyone I’m really close to, but I would never look at a nurse and think “why is she pretending to be a doctor?” I do not blame you one bit for your rant!! This makes me ragey and like I said, I’m not even in health care! I actually chose my family doctor FOR his NP and I am so thankful for all that she does for me!
Caroline @ Windy City Chic says
Personally I cannot stand that show. It is just not my jam. I love Kelly & Michael though, she is my celebrity twin. :-) Anyway…. I don’t like it when people make comments about something that they aren’t educated about too. You work SO hard every day and I have a HUGE amount of respect for you and other healthcare professionals. My brother-in-law is also a doctor. I saw two nurses on the bus yesterday (their scrubs said RN on them) and I think that they were on their way home. I thought geez they must be tired from working so hard. Hats off to Miss CO for doing that too. I would have done my rap that I made up about corn dogs. More on that another time!!! Don’t let idiots ruin your day either lady!!! Keep on rocking it like you do every day! :-)

Honestly, I don’t even know why The View is still on. They just sit around and act catty when none of them are in any position to be talking negatively about anyone. It sickens me that not only did they make such an ignorant remark about someone in health care but they openly were shaming another woman. Pathetic on so many levels. Happy to say I’ve never watched the show and never will!

Bravo. I was in a fit of rage yesterday when I first saw this story posted by one of my good nurse friends on FB. She’s head of the cardiac care unit at our local hospital and I am sure is quite well versed in using the “doctors stethoscope”. Ugh… I have hated the View for a very long time for many other political reasons… now I have another reason. Thank you for doing what you do!!
kerri @ cheshire kat says
i hate the view. all they do is fire people and say terrible things and who knows who watches it. but i did hear about that. unacceptable! i give props to anyone in healthcare. it’s not an easy job and y’all are troopers!

Joy is just a stupid, ignorant bi-otch who isn’t funny AT ALL like she thinks she is. I still can’t believe she said it in a joking matter. She thinks she’s obviously above the rest of us not on TV but I hate to break it to you Joy, if you get sick on your deathbed, who do you think will be taking care of you? All the money in the world can’t give you great health so don’t piss off the people who will be by your side keeping you alive. Her comment didn’t bother me too much at first, I just think she’s dumb, but the more I think about it, the more it makes me angry!!
Jaelan @ Making Mrs. M says
Girl! I am right there with you.
From the other side of the species list, I can tell you that veterinary technicians are the nurses of the veterinary field… and it angers me to see comments like this made.
Jaelan @ Making Mrs. M says
I didn’t finish my thought —
It angers me because clearly people have no idea what goes on with their health care. They have no idea what kind of experts the nurses are.
ARG.
Amanda says
I don’t get their comments at all. Like, honestly. It makes no sense. Have they never been to a Dr? I usually spend more time with the nurse and he/she’s almost always the one who checks my vitals. Just plain stupid.
Paige @ An Uncomplicated Life Blog says
Hold on! When I had H, I was mostly cared for by nurses and nurses aids. If memory serves me right, ALL of the nurses had stethoscopes. And they used it on me. So what’s this ginger’s problem? Has she not had care from a nurse before? Don’t worry. She’s getting old and will need care soon, and will find out just how ESSENTIAL nurses are. What a dumb thing to say! As a former Miss Minnesota myself, I can’t stand it when people speak poorly of women in pageants. I’m sure this ginger thought Miss Colorado was dumb and talentless; when in fact, monologues are indeed an appropriate form of talent and are very underused. Most contestants will try to get up there and fake that they can sing before they speak, and this woman showcased her career. Did you know the age cutoff for Miss America is 24? So she’s gone to nursing school and started a successful career before 24, one that she can speak ELOQUENTLY about on a stage with an audience and cameras on national TV. That is more than most can say, and my hunch is that it’s definitely more than this stupid ginger can say.
Carly says
All the claps and snaps to you! Joy Behar routinely spouts off ignorant things, but this one might take the cake.
Katie Elizabeth says
Joy and The View need to get off TV for making remarks like that – seriously, someone needs to hold them accountable. So terrible. I’ve spent a lot of time in hospitals when my mom was sick and all of the wonderful people I remember from those days are the NURSES. They do anything and everything for their patients and you guys deserve people lifting you up, not making ignorant remarks. Ugh. Keep up the good work, girlfriend! So many people out there appreciate everything you do!
Julia @ Grace Makes New says
I can’t stand The View and have no idea why it is still on the air. They’re the most catty, ridiculous women. And ummm, the wonderful lady I make an appointment with and see at every visit IS a nurse practitioner, and I love her. I rarely see the actual doctor who has her name on the door.
Jessi says
You’re a hero and a role model. Keep sharing your strong opinions and you will continue making this world a better place! <3 hugs and coffee

Great piece, lady! My SIL & BIL are both nurses and the things they tell us sometimes are insane. They deal with so much and for people, who do nothing but talk all day, to talk badly about the profession is just wrong. I applaud you, friend.
Brittany says
I don’t watch the news or talk tv either so when I first heard about this story–I was like wait a minute–there has to be more to it..Nope–just like you said blatant ignorance and very failed joke
Missy says
Excellent post, this is what is wrong with America, shows and views like these. I still cannot believe they said that, so damn ignorant. And so sorry about your grandma, my grandpa is suffering with it now and it is so painful to watch, but seeing how well his caregivers treat him makes it easier.
Rebecca Jo says
Welcome back Joy… stick your foot in your mouth as soon as you start back… geez….

PREACH!!! I cannot believe someone would make such a dumb comment! Then she apologized and said she said thought it was a “costume” and wasn’t paying attention. Please!
Courtney says
Ugh, like you, these are the reasons I tend to tune out so much of what’s on TV these days! Both of my parents work in healthcare (RN and a respiratory therapist) and I would be so saddened to hear anyone talk that way about either of them! It takes a team to keep patients well, and it makes me so happy there are people like you (and my parents) who do their part to keep that team working!
Nikki says
You go girl!!!! Being a medical assistant in cardiology I use a “Doctor” stethoscope all day long and cannot imagine how nurses felt after hearing that. I can’t wait until one of them end up in the hospital, they’re gonna be lucky nurses care about their patients too much that they’ll still care for them no matter what. They need to issue a real apology and not something that was scripted and not genuine! Phew end rant myself :)! Hugs for being on the frontline and taking such good care of patients and training the wonderful nurses of the future!!!
Alex says
I saw your disclaimer of writing this post in rage and was hoping you could go back and fix your misspellings so that I can share this post.
You misspelled physician twice, two different ways: Physicans, Phyiscan Assisants
I mean what DO these ladies at the View think we do?
Thank you!
Karly says
Preach, girlfriend! We all know how important nurses are and what you guys do for patients – I typically prefer nurses to the doctors that I see! :) This whole thing has been ridiculous, and I agree that I can’t believe the women on that show would be ignorant enough to say something like that. Get educated before you open your mouth, geez.
Lindsay says
Get it out girl! 99% of the time I prefer to see a nurse practitioner at a specialist (my oncologist and dermatologist 100%) because they are who I have the relationship with, the one who really listens to me, and the one I just trust more to not write me off. I have a lot of friends who are RN’s and NP’s and it is no joke. That is a hard job, physically and emotionally and don’t let anyone ever take that away from you!
Helene in Between says
so well said! i appreciate your candor and couldn’t agree more. it’s just plain ridiculous that those words out of Joy’s mouth were even spoken!
Marie says
Wow, I cannot believe Joy said what she did. How ignorant. I love the nurses in my drs office. In fact, I like them so much that I always try to see them rather than my doctor. To be honest, they know me better and they are much more caring. Nurses are so important and so vital and some are even smarter than the drs they work for. Joy should be ashamed of herself. Ugh, never a fan of the show and never will be.
Jessi otey says
Preach it girl! Well said! There are so many nurses in my family – most importantly- my Mama! Love this!
Jennifer says
Nurses work hard! I am shocked this was stated!
Annie Thompson says
I cannot believe they said that! My sister-in-law is a NP and we see another NP instead of a pediatrician, and another NP for our internist! Obviously we are big nurse fans. I find that NPs on the whole tend to give a more thorough and holistic view to treatment whether it is preventative or illness-related. They have no idea how ignorant they are about the health system. You deserve to be enraged! Nurses are not “just a nurse!”
Annie- All Things Big and Small

Not that I hold any real respect for The View in the first place, but I seriously can’t believe they said that. How ignorant and just messed up! I don’t care if you are a brain surgeon, a nurse, an anesthesiologist, the person who gets paid $10 to change the old people diapers in the nursing home or the damn receptionist that makes my appointment for me….anyone who works in the health field deserves some recognition and respect.

Thank you so much for this post. One of the things about living in Australia is from time to time I can avoid or don’t hear about stories like this. I couldn’t even tell you who the hosts are on The View anymore. I know Barbara Walters left. That’s it. What a completely ignorant thing to say about nurses. I feel nurses have a vital and often thankless job. Why anyone else would not realize that baffles me.
Krystal // The Krystal Diaries says
They’re just ignorant, out of touch with reality, idiots. Every nurse I’ve dealt with has always had a stethoscope. Obviously these dimwits don’t take care of their health and go for check ups. A bunch of morons getting paid to put other people down.
Sara says
Preach sister!!! I’ve been beyond blessed by nurses this weekend so this REALLY speaks to my heart. Thankful for all of you who can treat and care for patients!!
Kristen says
oh wow. how absolutely disgustingly ignorant of them. i am embarrassed for them. bloody idiots.
Stephanie @ ChalkSouthernToMe says
My reaction was the exact same! I can’t even imagine thinking this yet alone saying a comment that is hurtful, ignorant and embarrassing. Everyone in the medical field has a special gift and the passion that each of you have for your patients doesn’t go unnoticed! Xo, Stephanie
