Things I Miss From My 90’s Childhood + a Giveaway!

February 13, 2014

The other day Kathy posted a timeline about the years gone by and I was cracking up because I have had this post hanging out in my drafts folder and knew I needed to get it finished.  Great minds really think alike.

Before we dive in yours truly is involved in quite the giveaway.  I mean who doesn’t love free stuff and even better a gift card to spend on whatever you want.  I was in there the other day they have some seriously amazing new workout sports bras.

a Rafflecopter giveaway
Okay so back to the original story.  So I am pushing 30 which places my birth year at 1984….so I had the epic experience of having my younger years in the 80s and 90s.  I mean I wasn’t as lucky as my sister who was older than me and she therefore got to go to the New Kids on the Block concert….I was too young.  I can still remember her tearing around the house Christmas morning when she got those.  There is video proof….did you parents use to tape record  every Christmas btw??  I digress.

Okay so here are some of the things I miss or at least think what were we thinking back then?

1//  The Pink Barbie Corvette Convertible

I was never cool enough to have one but my neighbor Danielle would “pick me up” and we would cruise around our street Silver Hill talking on the car phone in the middle.  That is until the 8 minute battery reserve would die and we would have to plug it back it….such early problems of plug in cars.
source

2// Mall Madness

I am starting to see a trend here….and people wonder why our generation is obsessed with materialistic goods.  I mean pink corvettes and talking mall games??? We were set up to fail at such an early age!  Who could say no to that robotic talking voice “Attention Mall Shoppers….Sale at the Fashion Boutique”.  You even got your own credit card and nobody trained you about “limits” or the percentage the company charged you!
source

3// Sweet Valley High Books

I think I read every single one of these.  My dad use to call them “bubblegum books” like aka had no substance but who can forget Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield??  Who did you identify more with??  How could you forget their older brother Steven or Elizabeth’s on and off again BF Todd Wilkins.  I mean these books had some real life lessons right?
via
I mean the stash in that first one…I can’t even….like literally I die over here.

4// Dream Phone

I’m still having a hard time ever thinking my mother would buy this for me.  I think I would play it over at my friends house because this was clearly not an approved way of spending time in my household.  See all the examples we had growing up?  “Hello Hunk??”

5// Pink Crimper

I wasn’t allowed to have one but you know I would sneak and steal my sisters.  Hers was baby pink and I totally wish I still had it.  What color was yours?
via
Don’t worry my Aunt found one for me at a garage sale recently she said it had my name written all over it.  It has been put to good use.

6// R L Stine Books

This trip down memory lane has been very enlightening.  Perhaps these books were the beginning source for my irrational fear of things jumping out to get me?  I mean with titles such as “Say Cheese and Die!”  I mean honestly!

7//Butterfly Hair Clips

This was a good look…..on nobody.
via

8// Limited Too Sweatshirts or LTD

I still look back on these and cringe.  Seriously the most unflattering boxy sweatshirts and I begged my mom to get me one.  I totally had a plaid logo one with the leggings to match.  Also did anyone else’s Limited Too have “store front models” please tell me you did so I don’t feel like the biggest idiot in the entire world.  My little friend Crystal and I would pose in the storefront windows all dressed in the various matched sweatshirt to headband combo for like an hour at a time.  We thought we were so cool and totally “models”.  A little piece of me just died inside as I wrote that out.
(via tumblr)

9// Fun Dip and Candy Cigarettes

Let’s give children candy sticks and dip them into powdered sugar…..genius.
(via tumblr)
Candy cigarettes????  You know I sure as heck wasn’t allowed to “smoke” aka blow out the powdered sugar. Seriously what big wig executive got those approved for children??  I’m so glad to think about my mother launching those out of my hand when she saw them (at the time no….but now yes).

10// Three Way Calling

I actually don’t miss this one but like how many times did that happen to you??? I would always try to not say anything too snarky but of course the one time I did my “frenemy” let’s say had my “boyfriend” on the phone listening and she was like “see Matt Amanda thinks you are too short for her to go to the 7th grade dance with and she’ll tower over you in her platform silver strappy heels so you should definitely go with me because I’m way shorter and not all tall and awkward like Amanda”. Clearly I have some unresolved feelings about this……

Honorable Mentions (basically I am OCD and like to keep my lists at 10)

Girl Talk
Pretty Pretty Princess
Those awful black plastic choker necklaces
Pongs
Slap Bracelets
Stick on earrings
I mean the list is endless……
Alright I hope y’all enjoyed my trip down memory lane!  What things do you miss from growing up? Or what things are you like seriously I cannot believe they made that for children!!!
Have a fabulous day and if you enjoyed this random musing of mine please feel free to follow stalk me on my various social media outlets down below….xoxoxoxxo

bahahahahaha!!! i love this! all of it! ok, i miss:

garbage pail stickers, smelly stickers, fuzzy stickers…basically any stickers because i love them all and traded them like a boss. i would even go so far as to scrutinize every sticker that was offered to see if it was “worth” the one they wanted from. i had my screening process down.

GIMP! omg, the gimp. and then there were those black plastic bracelets that we called “madonna bracelets” because when she came out, that’s all she wore. they came for $2.50 for 3 or 5 for $5 at a store called Razz m’ Tazz.

friendship bracelets/beads/pins. you made them for your friends and you wore the pins on your tretorns.

PINNED JEANS with leg warmers and tretorns were all the rage.

Kid n Play and the pajama jammy jams. when that movie came out, basically everyone wanted to have a pajama jammy jam and all the girls wanted to dress like hos

omg i should make another post about this. there’s so much material!

I remember every single one of these!! Sweet Valley High – I used to be obsessed with the show and the books!! The butterfly hair clips, don’t even get me started on how many I would use at once!! And Mall Madness….my cousin used to have all the best games so we’d always play at her house!! Wish I was cool enough to have the pink corvette, although probably best I didn’t as I’m sure to have crashed it!!

Omg! I was always trying to wear the pretty pretty princess jewelry to kindergarten! The pink set of course. (No one ever let me) I also was not permitted to own dream phone, so I had to indulge at other’s houses. Mall madness was super fun, my older cousin had it. My mom was forever crimping my hair. We used it when I was a witch for Halloween if I recall haha. I used the butterfly clips in a futile attempt to disguise a horrendous 7th grade hair cut. A word of advice don’t bring pictures from the alloy catalog of girl’s that don’t resemble you and expect to acheive the same result. haha! I have since sported long locks and will never try short hair again. lol

My BFF in elementary school had Mall Madness and Dream Phone and they were my favorites! And three way calling was so cool when you got a link of like eight people on the phone. It was like an old school group text. I totally coveted that Sarah Michelle Gellar hairstyle, too. What was wrong with us? Why did we need a tribe of tiny butterflies on our heads? Ha!

HA!! I love it!! I was an ’86 kid, so mall madness, the dream phone, and hair crimper bring back such good memories. I actually used my oooollllldddd ass crimper to crimp my 2 years olds hair last week. :-)

This made my day!! I seriously wouldn’t leave the house unless my head was covered in butterfly clips and the highlight of my week was getting to go to the library to check out a new Sweet Valley High book! Speaking of books.. remember Goosebumps? My parents totally had to take those away from me because they would freak me out so much I would stay awake all night! Did you ever have a tomagatchi? That little egg basically ruled my life’s schedule haha!

I never did it to anyone but I got to listen in on a few confrontations. R.L. Stine and Sweet Valley High books were some of my favorites! And Limited Too… wow. I remember CRYING because my mom wouldn’t crimp my hair! I had curly, curly hair so my mom wouldn’t put any heat on it for fear of ruining my hair. I was DEVASTATED. Oh, and Fear Street books?! I was all over those. I read every.single.one. I remember I was always so bummed when they ended up not being scary. Apparently a glutton for punishment, I’d grab the next Fear Street book with hopes this one was going to be the scary one.
